The company traces it's history back to 1692 and the founder, Franz Benedikt Leismiller. The business passed to his son, Joseph Bonaventura Leismiller (1698-1737) who had served his apprenticeship with his uncle Joseph Grossauer. Following the early death of Joseph, his widow ran the business along with J.G. Uhl until 1758, then her son Franz Xaver Leismiller (1735-1810) took over, but died childless. The business then passed to Franz's journeyman, Anton Weishaupt (1776 -1832), who had married into the family, and then to his son, Carl Weishaupt (1802-1864).

Carl Weishaupt's son, Max II Weishaupt (1838—1903) succeeded to the business in 1868, and his widow, Anna, from 1903 until 1918. Their daughter, Clara, was married to August Neresheimer.

The marks of the Weishaupt company:











Clara and August's daughter, Hanni Biehler, ran the company up until 1944, then it passed to her son, Rudolf Biehler, until 1999.

Since 1999 the business of Carl Weishaupt has been in the hands of Florian Biehler.

C. Hugo Pott - Solingen - 1966

The company was founded at Solingen by Carl Hugo Pott who established a workshop in 1904 for the processing of damascened steel for the cutlery industry. His son, Carl Pott, the renowned flatware designer, joined the company in 1932, Carl Pott's avant-garde designs brought the company worldwide recognition that attracted other brilliant designers such as Hermann Gretsch, Wilhelm Wagenfeld, Elisabeth Treskow, Hans Schwippert and not least, the great Josef Hoffmann to design cutlery and flatware for the company.




Josef Hoffmann's 'Pott 86' pattern, designed in 1955 and winner of the design awards at Exposition universelle Bruxelles, Etoile d’Or · 12. Triennale Milano, Diploma d’Oro · Wels, Goldmedaille · 4. Biennale of Industrial Design, Ljubljana · Biennale Venezia. The pattern is manufactured in sterling silver by Potts today.


In 1985 Carl Pott passed away and the business passed to his only son, Hanns Peter Pott, who continued his father's work and supplemented it with extravagant designs by young artists. In 2006 the business was acquired by Seibel, the producer of hand-crafted flatware that was established in 1895. The business has now moved to the neighbouring town of Mettmann.

Described in 1904 as Royal Bavarian Court Jeweller, the business at this time was in the hands of Paul Merk.

1904 advertisement: "Own workshops for the manufacture of jewels, gold and silver ornaments, after own and foreign designs, in all styles. Prizes awarded at six great exhibitions".

One of the greatest houses in the world for bronzes. Hermann Gladenbeck was born on the 24th January 1827, he started his business in 1851. Hermann was later joined by his son, Oskar, and the business was restyled to H. Gladenbeck & Sohn. Hermann Gladenbeck died on the 11th November 1918 and the business closed in 1926.

Member Bahner provided the following information:

Moses Tobias Wetzlar (1847 — 1916), son of famed Rabbi Mordechai Wetzlar, had founded his shop for jewels, gold- and silverware in Munich in 1875. Wetzlar, his sons and grandsons became leading figures of the Munich cultural scene, were suppliers to the Bavarian court and held close contact to leading Munich designers in the years before and after the First World War. Being of Jewish origin, the family was forced to sell out in 1938 and fled to Great Britain.

Member Silverport provided the following information:

As far as M.T. Wetzlar is concerned, they were founded in 1875 by Moses Tobias Wetzlar (b.1847, d.1916). At least two of his sons, Markus and Heinrich entered the trade, and it was Markus who took over the business following the death of his father, and it was he who was granted the title 'Königlich Bayerischer Hoflieferant' (Bavarian court supplier).

When Markus Wetzlar died in 1925, his younger brethren Heinrich (born 1891) and Alexander (born 1893) took over and were responsible until the sale on 21st October 1938. On 21st April 1939 they arrived in London. Alexander died in London on the 16th May 1957, aged 63 years. Heinrich moved at the age of 65 years back to Munich, to become sales manager for Nymphenburger porcelain. He died aged 81years.
