FOSTER
13, Aldgate, London
On Tuesday night an extensive robbery was committed in the house of Mr Foster, a jeweller, 13 Aldgate, when jewellery to the amount of 1,900l. was stolen. About eleven o'clock on Tuesday night, Mr Foster's errand boy was sent out for some beer for supper; Mr Foster was the only person in the house at the time, and he was in the room over the shop. The boy on leaving the shop shut the door, which was secured by a spring lock, and it is supposed that at that moment the thieves opened the door with a picklock, and entered the house. The boy, on returning with the beer, found the door open. An alarm was immediately raised, and every part of the house was searched, except a water-closet, which is behind the shop. No one having been found concealed in the premises, Mr Foster fell satisfied that if the thieves had entered the premises they had been alarmed, and had gone off without taking anything. He had been up stairs, however, but a few minutes, when he heard a chair overturned in the shop, and on going down he discovered, notwithstanding the vigilant search be had made, that some persons had concealed themselves in the house, and had carried off the property before mentioned. The thieves were evidently in a great hurry, as they left behind goods to the amount of 2,000l. It is supposed that they had concealed themselves in the water-closet. A reward of 100 guineas has been offered for the apprehension of the robbers.

J. BROMPTON
Hatton Garden, London
London, March 28.—A second visit was made by jewel thieves to the premises of J. Brompton, a Hatton Garden diamond merchant, this week and approximately $50,000 worth of gems were taken from a seven hundredweight safe. At the last attempt to obtain the contents of the safe the jewel gang was interrupted the whole of the burglaring implements being left behind. The plans for the second attempt were well thought out. Scotland Yard is satisfied that the jewel thieves secreted themselves on the premises. At least four men must have been engaged in the robbery since it needed this number to carry the safe to the position in which it was found. When the robbery was discovered in the morning the safe was on its side, its door forced open and the precious stones gone. The office was in a state of confusion. The contents of the safe included 97 rings set with gems and a number of pearl necklaces, diamond pendants, diamond and sapphire watch bracelets, diamond and platinum watches and several parcels of loose stones. The drill used to open the safe door was left behind as were a number of burglaring tools. Messrs Tyler, the Holborn Viaduct agents for the Hatton Garden jewelers, have offered a $5,000 reward for the recovery of the stolen gems and the identification of the thieves.

HARRY NORMAN
London
Harry Norman, a London jeweler, has just received 12 months in the second division for conspiracy in an attempt to obtain $5,000 insurance from Lloyds by staging a bogus burglary at his premises. George F. Norman, jeweler, was bound over. Three other men got sentences varying from eight months to two years for complicity in the affair. Harry Norman took out the burglary insurance policy. Some time later the police were called to see how the side of a jewelry safe had been torn off. A keen detective, however, spotted the fake. Some of the supposed stolen jewelry later was found at the jeweler’s home. Two of the men who went to prison with Norman carried out the bogus burglary.

BENJAMIN J. WARWICK
London
How a firm of London pearl brokers has lost something like $70,000 in pearl thefts was recounted at the Old Bailey this week when a Stephen Ronchi pleaded guilty to stealing a bunch of pearls worth $70,000 from Messrs. Benjamin J. Warwick, one of the largest firms in London dealing in pearls, Defendant Ronchi, it seems, was a dealer, and he was entrusted with $70,000 worth of the firm’s pearls to dispose of. He told the company he had received an offer for the pearls but could not get the money. When the pearl packet was opened later it contained only bits of tinsel. Defendant’s counsel said he held the highest possible character and was trusted throughout the trade. Sentence was postponed until next sessions.
