Hi,
I have several spoons from Norway that have dates stamped on the back. This is an example of one. I was wondering if the date indicates the year the spoon was made or if it is indicative of something else like the establishment of the maker's company.

Generally it's the date of manufacture; the marks you show are also recorded with the dates 1864 & 1868. By the way, the maker here is Magnus Samuel Wessman(n) of Moss. Swedish by birth, he worked for Tostrup in Christiana/Oslo before receiving his trade license in Moss in 1856. He sold the business in 1892.

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much! My great grandmother was from Moss. This spoon must have belonged to her family.
