This sterling wickerwork basket is hallmarked London, 1850. Made by Robert Hennell IV.
It's 27.75 inches (70.5 cm.) long.

What is it called or meant to hold?
(No, it is not an Easter egg basket).

Very well done Larkfield.
Yes, it is called an Ortolan basket.

This basket was used to serve Ortolans, a small bird that was served as a delicacy.
They were a favorite dish of King Charles II (1630-85).

The interior of the basket represents twelve bird's nests made of stalks and ears of wheat.
The nests are removable for cleaning.
