This set of two square bowls is driving me nuts! I cannot find any information on the maker. I thought it was a sterling piece, but it doesnt have the traditional markings. It does have two trademarks on it, a crown and a wheat stalk.

Both bowls (identical) say Thomas 153 New Bond St and both have a little hand etched mark below that (hard to see in pic) that looks like 8134 or x134 or 5134.

What the heck is this item, and where can I find more info on the marks and maker? Thanks!

Hello.

That mark was used by Francis Boone Thomas of London, silversmith and retailer.
The hallmark at the bottom of my picture was used from 1874 to 1901.
Not sure how long they used that top mark.
The firm closed down in 1941.



Your piece is silverplated. If it were sterling it would have the required British Hallmarks.

Just to make sure I completely understand this; the hallmark you have on your photo is for the maker, but your piece is also silverplate because it does not contain the required British Hallmarks, correct?

I'm very new to all this, but am excited to learn more!

The top marks in my picture were used on both silverplate and sterling.
The bottom mark is their sterling mark that they entered in London in 1874.
My piece did have the required British hallmarks, I just don't show them in the picture.
