Info on "Strube & Sohn" piece

Post by eglass »

Hello!

I'm hoping someone can tell me a little about the company that marked this piece - "Strube & Sohn". It also has the half moon and crown mark, and "800".

I haven't been able to find out whether they were silversmiths or jewelers - I've seen the name referencing both types of items.

Many thanks!

Kelli

Hello, that would be Carl Julius Theodor Strube (originally: Struve). Born in Braunschweig, moved to Leipzig in 1819, active there as a jeweller. The firm is listed in the directories as Strube and Son at least until 1942. Though Strube also had a workshop and made some well-known pieces in the 19th century, he is most likely just the retailer of this piece. Best wishes, Bahner
