silver ingot markings

Post by cobaltBlue »

hi

i'm trying to find out the markings on this ingot (image below). from the charts i figure its birmingham sterling but the letter 'c' denotes 1902 which somehow doesnt seem right as the queens head is also present.
ideas anyone?

Hi Cobaltblue,

Without a shadow of a doubt, this is indeed, Birmingham, with Elizabeth's head and is certainly of the year 1977.

As a matter of interest, there are, in mny experience, very few "ingots" that are of other than the "modern" (i.e. post 1950s era - I'm open to correction).

I hope I've helped you
Best wishes,

Tom

The 1977 Queen's head is commemorative of her Silver Jubilee - 25 years as monarch. Over the years there have been several special marks like this - they are not duty marks, and I believe their use was optional, primarily for souvenirs.
