Hi,
Virtually every American manufactured piece of sterling will have a sterling or, on occasion, a 925 stamp to go along with its maker's mark. If it does not, you can safely assume it is silverplate.
Yours appears to be a good quality covered serving dish, but I don't know the maker. Hopefully someone will identify it for you.

Your dish was made by Friedman Silver Co, Inc. of Brooklyn, NY. Dorothy Rainwater's book "American Silver Manufacturers and Their Marks", states that they were "creators of fne holloware since 1908". They were purchased by Gorham in 1960. I agree with Tom that if it is not marked Sterling or 925, it probably is not.
