Dear Folks,

I need assistance to ID the hallmark on this 14 KT Art Nouveau Chatelaine BROOCH fashioned in an Egyptian Revival, Greek, or Etruscan motif. The hallmark is on the "C" clasp and looks like an upside down "three leaf clover" with "14" and a capital "A" inside the clover. Would appreciate knowing the following:

1. Country of origin

2. Age

3. Maker

Regards,

Chris

Hello Chris.

Believe that mark was used by Alling & Company of Newark, New Jersey.
In business at least as early as 1837 as "Alling, Hall & Dodd".
The firm was called A & J C Alling & Company around 1844.
By 1881 was known as A. Alling & Company.
Some time before 1896 they became Alling & Company.

Don't know how long they were in business or when exactly they used your mark.

Pat,

Thanks for the information. It is greatly appreciated!

Is there a hallmark reference book that you are aware of for the Newark and NJ goldsmiths of the late 19th and early 20th centuries?

Best regards,

Chris

Hi Chris.

You're welcome.
I found your mark in Dorothy Rainwater's "American Jewelry Manufacturers".
Don't know if there are jewelry books specific to Newark and NJ goldsmiths of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
