Hello, nice piece. Yes, that is the Esslingen mark of Krupp-Berndorf, mentioned in the other thread. I would date the design around 1930, give or take a few years. Best wishes, Bahner

:-)

Many thanks Bahner.

I was suspecting this was the mark, B, E and a Key in the middle, but you know without picture...and this one is not appearing in the Krupp-Berndorf section, not in silver and not in silver plate items, so (to the admins) add my picture to the archives :-)

We love the candle-holders, and now we know who's the maker.

Many tanhks again.

Berndorf candelabra - at least plated - in Esslingen/Germany

Hello

Berndorf candelabra made — at least plated — in Esslingen[/b] branch of Berndorf (B = Berndorf, key = Esslingen town symbol, E = Esslingen). «Esslingen am Neckar» is an very old town of Württemberg, Germany. Metal ware factory started there in begin of XIX century by C.C.U. Deffner, who had a high approach towards quality of his products, professional education and social — followed same way by his sons. First products were lacquered, followed by «Sheffield Plate». Birthplace of many high quality metal ware company — including merging A. Ritter & Cie. (directed by Carl Haegele) and Straub & Son forming WMF; Carl Haegele as «driving axle».

Berndorf Esslingen was 1919 successor of «Württembergische Alfenidewaren-Fabrik Hans Peter». Hans Peter was, before he started his own business, art director of WMF. His main artwork for WMF and later for his own was in «Art nouveau» style; almost to be produced in Britannia alloy.

Yours candelabra design is a mix of «Neue Sachlichkeit» (Functionalism, e.g. Bauhaus), in his upper part, crowned by an «Art deco» centre cone and base.

Design could be from Vienna and production in nickel silver could be made in Berndorf, Austria itself; plated then after in Esslingen (actually I haven’t a catalogue and notices to could sound precise, where). Style of that time; maybe by Berndorf own art studio?

Time range I guess: 1925 — 1940. Production facility in Esslingen-Oberesslingen was closed in third quarter of XX century — and dismantled some year later.

Engraving PF in script style would be owners - not artist's - sign.

Kind regards silverport

Many thanks silverport;

So, are you linking the design to the Wiener Werkstätte?
It is looking slightly as Hoffman designs for the WW, specially the foot (fuss).

If you feel more confortable writing in german you can send us a PM, my husband is german :-)

Interesting the conection with Deffner....and with Württemberg, WMF home...

Hans Peter, the same one that was working for Urania in Maastrich?

This s getting interesting....

Many thanks :-)
