I'm guessing the two righthand marks are import marks of some sort. Does anyone recognize them?

Hi -

your salt spoon was Russian made, St. Petersburg ca. 1850/90, the maker CE could be Ernest (Ernst) Carl but I am not sure because he used a mark in a rectangel cartouche.
In 1920 the Estonian government kept the ex- Russian law regarding silver but changed the marking system. The first silver marks of the independent Estonia were two marks, fleur-de-lis and the letters EW standing for Eesti Wabariik (Estonian Republik). The silver content was still shown in Zolotniki (84 = 875/1000). This was used until 27th May 1924 when the new marks came.
Now the question: Why Estonian marks on Russian silver? Estonia had no import marks and 1920 you could not import silver from the communistic Sovietunion. In 1920 while independent, many Estonian wanted their Russian silver re assayed/stamped to show their patriotic feelings.

Hi Tom,

EW stands for Eesti Wabariik (Republic of Estonia) and the spoon seems to have been re-assayed between 1919/20--24. In 1924 the leopard mark was introduced.

I hope that someone will be able to help you with the maker's mark and the exact year when the Estonian Republic started hallmarking.
