help on mustard pot hallmark

Hi , I have this mustard pot and I can not understand the hallmark , there is a makers mark and date letter but no silver mark or city mark just a shield? any help would be appreciated , thanks

Hi,
The maker appears to be Edward, Edward, John & William Barnard. See:

As well as being silversmiths they had a plateing works in London and this is likely to be one of their early pieces.

A military thing for "Regiment 11" officers mess? or similar,
That means hotel silver.
But I soppose that you already knew this.

Another term along with hotel ware might be institutional ware. I'm not much of an expert, but my guess is that your item looks a bit better than either of those. Definitely, silver plate as you were advised though.

Pieces made for hotels, railway lines, steamship lines, schools and similar institutions experience far more wear and tear than items intended for home use. Manufacturers of hotel ware would make the pieces with a thicker body and add a heavier layer of plating to give them a longer working life.

Hello John,
The engraving could refer to the 11th Regiment of Foot, latterly known as the Devonshire & Dorset Regiment.
The regiment has a museum and perhaps the curator could confirm whether the engraving indicates the mustard pot was that regiment's mess silver.
Note however there may be a research charge.
