Hi Joe,

I'm afraid you're looking for the impossible, the Newcastle Assay Office closed in 1884.

See: http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... 38&t=15285" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Are you sure it's the Newcastle mark that you're researching? Their mark is sometimes confused with that of Chester.

Regards Trev.

Hi Joe,

Our posts crossed. That is Chester, from what I can of the date mark, it appears to be 1930.

The maker was Thomas James Skelton of 86, Vyse Street, Birmingham.

It was quite common for Birmingham manufacturers to send their work to the Chester Assay Office, as Chester had a more up-market reputation.

G/day Trev....After thinking about it, the fob is not the date I wanted [1902-1909] So I might sell or swap it[it has a gold football on the front]...Joe

Hi Joe,

Try getting a clearer image of the marks so that we can be sure.

Hi Joe,

It still looks like 1930 to me, unless of course the mark is struck sideways which sometimes happens.

Skelton entered their mark at the Chester Assay Office in 1909, so it cannot be earlier than that date.

Can someone cast a fresh pair of eyes on this dateletter and offer an opinion?

Regards Trev.
