There is a number R9404318 on the reverse of the handel, to the left of the hallmarks. What does this mean?

Hi,
Welcome to the Forum.
Are you sure it's not RN404318?
A photo would help.
See:

Hi Trev
Thanks. The 2nd character is not too clear, but I think it is a "9". However, from the link you gave I see that the registered number was used only after 1884, whilst I believe that the date letter gives me 1839.
I've taken two pics, but don't know how to attach to this!

Hi Al,
This should help:
How to Add Images
http://www.tinypic.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; is recommended.
Your question highlights the importance of good images as John Round & Son were not established until 1847.
Trev.

Hi Trev
I've now opened an account with PhotoBucket (which is where tinypic.com took me). I've posted the two images; hope you can access them.

These are the links for the photos:

http://s1178.photobucket.com/albums/x36 ... ySpoon.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
It is definitely John Round, Sheffield, date 1911 (date letter t)
The other photo appears to be Rd404318 which is a registration number, date design registered 1900 - 1909

TKs. I didn't pick up on the date letter - I saw it as the 1839 letter.
