Plamex Brand? 18K=.925=Rubies Buckle Ranger Type

Post by brax39 »

Please help = Need information on this Silversmith Mark = Any information on any question or combination of questions below will help and I will do my best to follow the posting rules. I thank all in advance for any help.

Pictures included below. More then anything I would love to have information on the Silversmiths (or Brand) Mark.

Lot of additional information and history below, may or may not be related to this post and about 6 or 7 questions that may or may not be needed.

I'm lost and don't know what to ask.

I have spent the past couple of years looking on the internet and taking this buckle to people and no one knows anything about the makers mark, at this point I would like to know nothing more about the buckle then the facts about the Mark if that is all I can get… Of course, any additional information would be great.

I have come to this site 3 or 4 times since Dec 2010 looking for this Mark and information. I don’t know for sure if this is a Mark from Mexico but when I started my internet search (early in 2010) the Plamex the name came up as a company in Mexico.

I have also been told Plamex is in Spain, Germany, been told it’s not Silver, not Gold, is thick Gold overlay, somebody stamped a phony name on it, the mark is a fake, one bullion (traveling type) buyer said there never was a Plamex company and a lot of other statements about the buckle, like I said, if nothing else, I want information on the Silversmiths mark

1. Any information or history on this makers mark?
This is the main question, answers to the below questions would be fantastic.

I apologize in the event that I ask the wrong type of questions below.

2. Would be great to know anything about the Silversmith mark, like is Plamex Brand name a combination of two words, what years the mark was used, is it a Eagle between the words Plamex and Sterling, I don’t understand why the word Guaranteed is used. As you can read, I don’t know anything about this Buckle or Brand name. I never thought to ask my Dad about the history before he died.

3. Plamex appears to be a Brand name?
4. Is Plamex still in business?
5. Any history on Plamex?
6. Any history on this buckle?

7. I need information on a "Plamex" Ranger Belt Buckle = 18K Gold and 925 Sterling Silver and 4 Rubies Maybe when it was made?

8. would be great to know anything about the mark and the Buckle

Disregard this question (or any other question) if it is not within the rules of this posting. I’m old and don’t really know (or understand) what I’m doing regarding this post.

Thank you.

Hi Brax 39,

Perhaps not Plamex but Flamex Sterling .
Please Google; Flamex Sterling Handmade in Mexico

Good luck with your quest.

Thanks oel = Great idea.

I researched FLEMEX and found they on the most part made Cigarette, Cigar & Pipe Lighters during 1970’s & 80’s Made in Japan.

HOWevER (not yelling) late today 12/08/11 I did find that PLAMEX is a Silver Mark, the Company did Handmade work in Mexico = In addition, the Eagle head (profile) under the PLAMEX name is their logo and when I find out how to add another picture to this post I will add the logo or silversmith mark. From what little information I have at this time it appears PLAMEX was making Jewelry of .925 and .928 Silver with 10K and 18K Gold overlay during the 1940’s and before. However, my Buckle has the word “Guaranteed”, this does not confirm to the word “Guarantee” that was on some Mexican Jewelry or that time period.

I truly thank you for your input and please keep me in mind as you research other stuff, specially if you get interested in my quest, of course, this would be great if you do get interested.

I will try and attach picture below earlier Mark (maybe later).

I thank you again oel = maybe the above Mark will help on this quest.

I truly thank you, you have given me more information and direction then anyone over the past 2 years.

And, I’m sorry, I misspelled the name in my return post, I did google FLAMEX not FLEMEX (not yelling) and I found 2 Flamex 1 for lighters and 1 for Fire equipment, but due to your help I have (as of today) found the below information out.

Plamex is listed in Hougart's definitive "The Little Book of Mexican Hallmarks," but with no information about the maker, very little is known about the maker, but that is O-K because I’m getting information a lot quicker now after 2 years of nothing. I did find and go to Google Books late last night.

Over the years I have sent hundreds of e-mails and web sites, in addition, recently I have found a number of Jewelry sites with Plamex items from Model "T" charms, earrings, rings, buckles and a lot more Jewelry, non with pictures of the Mark, I have received a great deal of e-mail replies some with pics, some asking me about Marks, of course, I suggest this site.

It appears that Plamex may go as far back as 1930’s, (not sure yet) but Hougart’s book states 1940’s through 1960’s.

From what I understand, Plamex did a lot of special orders for VIP’s and such. In addition, I found out the Pla was short for Plata (silver) and mex short for Mexico and (not substantiated yet) the 18K is a Gold overlay, not Gold filled Overlay and not Gold plated.

The silversmith/logo I submitted (both) are correct for Plamex, at this time I have no idea if these are the only two versions nor do I have information which was first to be used. The second Mark I submitted appears to be distorted from heavy polishing, however from what little I have learned, the second Mark was used during the 1940’s.

This Mark chasing quest has been more fun then having the buckle itself!

I can’t thank you enough for helping and suggestions on this quest, I hope you will continue in this matter with me. Who knows, With more information on Plamex, we may find out more about this buckle, like who was it made for, a Texan, a Texas Ranger, a Governor, a president or whoever, would be nice!

Looking forward to any reply from you and thanks again for all the input.
