Articulated horse watch fob? Origin?

Post by jojo 1 »

Hi there,
I have had this piece for quite a long time now and have always wondered where it was made or what it is!
It is engraved with eagles and rampant lions, all parts are articulated - the head, neck, stirrups, tail and all four legs. There is a spring like mechanism inside for the legs. The chain has various marks. Does anybody have any idea of its origin or indeed what it is?? A watch fob maybe? It is a sturdy, weighty piece for its size.
If anybody has any ideas.....Thank you, Jo.

French made for sure (``en losange`` maker’s mark, arrow 2,letters are not clearly seen, though). Two marks on the right are French marks for small items (arrow 1). Why two? Because the number and the position of marks in French marking system is consistent with the length of the chain; the maker cannot pay the duty on 5 inches chain of given weight and then return to the workshop and sell the chain 15 inches long with links added. Bte is short for breveté meaning patented design (patent protected).
Try to identify two letters in maker`s mark.
Most probably watch fob.

Hi AG2012,
Thank you so much! I love this little piece and want to find out as much as I can about it, thanks to you - I know where to start now! I will try to take closer photo's of the makers marks and see what I can come up with. There are further marks up the chain also, where another link fas been added. Will post closer pics of makers mark later. Thank you once again for your help. It is much appreciated.
Kind regards, Jo.

Hi again,
have managed to get a closer photo of makers mark, the initials appear to be CP or GP with a sword between the two letters - there may be another symbol below the sword. I have looked through the directory of French silver makers and I'm not too sure if any of them quite match. Anyhow here are the pics, I have also added a closer pic of the marks on the links further up the chain. If anyone can help me identify the maker, that would be great - I shall keep researching!! Thank you...
Best wishes, Jo

GB or CB?
If GB and``fleur de lys`` in the mark it must be Gaston Bardies, 1897 — 1914 (13, Rue de Fontaines,Paris)
And yes, French ``crab mark`` 1838- 1919 for ``petite garantie`` (small items).
Pretty little thing,articulated :-)

Hi Ag2012,
thank you, yes I think it's a really super little piece! The makers mark is definitely 'C.P' or 'G.P' and not G.B.
The symbol inbetween looks like a cross with a symbol underneath and not a fleur de lys. Can't quite put my finger on it, but will keep looking! Thank you for the heads up origin wise - I am learning something new about silver every day it seems. any more ideas about the maker of this piece would be gratefully received!
Best wishes, Jo.
