Silverplate Hallmarks can be very frustrating. These hallmarks don't seem to follow the more common British plate marks as I don't see any recongnizable mark. There is also a mark fo a unicorn (also pictured) The item is a shell serving dish with dolphin feet (I have seen variations of this item but not with these hallmarks). Any assistance would be appreciated.

As I am now obsessed with this I have kept researching this. Something caught my I so I turned the picture sideways. Well the first hallmark sure looks like a Kangaroo and the last hallmark a boar or a pig. So I am now under the assumption that it is AUSTRALIAN silver plate. Don't think I will find the maker ( I checked online). If somene would assure me I am on the right track or maybe I am just looking at something too long and inventing images, it would be appreciated. Here is the image sideways.

I don't know the maker but the mark is in gothic script, often used by platers. I read it as L T Co. The unicorn is an engraved family crest.

Thank you very much for your response. I took a look at some images of gothic script and your conclusion makes sense. I guess we can toss this into the unidentified makers marks. I do feel rather embarassed by my turning it sideways and seeing a kangaroo and a boar, but I am certain I am not the first who has "seen things" when looking at hallmarks. Cheers, John

No, you certainly will not have been the first to 'see things' when viewing marks.

The only 'L T & Co.' that springs to mind is Lloyd Taylor & Co., of 97, Cheapside, London, but to my knowledge they were only in the business of imitation jewellery, but it may be worthy of further research.

Also 'L T & Co.' may not have the maker of your item, it was not at all unusual for retailers to have their name only applied to to plated wares if their order to the actual maker was large enough, this may be a another path for research.

I have this same mark on a set of Candelabras that I just recently purchased, can anyone help identify these or is still considered a mystery mark?
