Help with Marks: Spaulding & Co/Dominick & Haff??

Got this sterling silver bowl today, if anyone can tell me what it was used for that would be great. It is marked "Spaulding and Co", "Sterling", "694" and also has a mark similar to "Dominick & Haff". Its a similar mark, but has 1890 in the diamond. Its a very heavy piece. Could it be that the bowl is by Spaulding and that the filigree was by Dominick & Haff?? Or since the mark is not exactly the same as Dominick & Haff, could it be for something else???

More likely it is made by Dominick and Haff, and retailed by Spaulding and Co. I don't know who Spaulding and Co are - but you could look for jewelry stores in the 1890 time range.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Agree with Jag. The mark is that of Dominick and Haff. See: http://www.925-1000.com/ax_D&H.html

Spaulding was, as far as I'm aware, an up-market Chicago retailer that was later to become part of Gorham.

One of their advertisements can be found here: http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... 38&t=31273

So, ifs its made by Dominick & Haff, is the "1890" in the diamond the date it was made?

I think it would be safe to make that assumption.
