Hi,
I'm trying to understand what these symbols mean. The right side is a magnified drawing of the bottom of the cup.

I've figured that W. G. & S is a Hallmark of a British company, but what does the other part mean?
Hope you can help me. I've been searching for hours.
Thanks

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Does the mark on the right look like this? : See: http://www.925-1000.com/registry.html

I can't tell...
I was hoping it would tell my what kind of silver it is and how old it is. I think it's just to small and old to identify.

Thanks for the fast reply. Hadn't seen that Design Number and Date Chart before.

Hi,

Please try to capture the marks in an image, if there are no other British hallmarks for silver
http://www.925-1000.com/british_marks.html than I believe it could be silver plated and perhaps made by William Griffiths & Sons around the turn of the 19th century.

This appears to be the mark of the American firm William Gale & Son, active 1853-1866. Nice find.

JayT. You are right!
It is William Gale & Son. Just like oel I thought it was William Griffiths & Sons.

Shouldn't it usually state what kind of Silver it is next to the Hallmark?

You are welcome.

Your cup was made before U.S. makers adopted the sterling silver standard. It is made of coin silver.
