Hi,

I have a French(probable) sugar-bowl with confusing marks.
Could you please help me to identify how old is this artifact? Is it possible to deduce where and by whom it was produced?

Hi,welcome to the forum.

To me it reads 'schleissner' in combination with the loth marking I believe it could be German-Prussian made pre-1886.

Hi,

I looked through the Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks at http://www.925-1000.com/Fgerman_hanau_marks_01.html
and I finded marks for Schleissner which do not fit to what I see on my bowl.
It is quite interesting.

Hi,

It certainly is interesting and our German/Eastern Europe specialists most probably will know a lot more, just wait and see. It does appear there is a pentagram like symbol in front of the S(?) By the way do you still have the glass liner?

Best,

Oel

Yes, you are right. Probably, there is a pentagram sign before S.
The first S has completely another "look&feel" than other letters in this inscription ?
The other issue is that for me the are two marks stampted on the bowl one on the other.
Unfortunately I do not have the original glass of age.

Cheers,
Dariusz

Do agree with you it does appear to be one mark over striking another mark and/or tampered with.
Let us wait for other opinions or reactions also moved your topic to our German section.

Hello, I have little doubt that this is an authentic Schleissner mark from the 19th century. Left of the name Schleissner is probably the letter "J". Dont think that one mark was punched over a different one, I rather believe that the same mark was punched twice, as the first punch was not good enough. Best wishes, Bahner

Hi,

Could you please look the other photos of the sugar-bowl at http://db.tt/zZSJC5r5
What is the reason to do so unsuccessful mark?
Do you think it is the contemporary item and someone tired to add the history to it ?

Hello, I saw the marks. As I said I do not see a problem with these marks. Believe it is dificult to get a perfectly punchend mark if the name is as long as here and if the silver surface is not flat but rounded. Seems plausible that a less experienced person tries twice to punch the mark. Best wishes, Bahner
