Hello,

I have a Birmingham napkin ring with 6 carved cartouches with images of birds. One additonal cartouche is blank - presumably for initials.

The hallmarks indicate Birmingham, 1880 - but I have not been able to find out anything about the maker - J.S. - or about this style of NR. It weighs 52 grammes - with a 1 3/4 inch diamter.

Than you for any help.

I suspect James Swann. I believe the company did make napkin rings, but from about 1887 specialised in thimbles. They certainly survived until recently and may still be in business.

However, to be sure we need photos!

I have photos, but don't presently have access to a server from which to send them.

I, too, thought James Swan - but then was puzzled when it seemed thimbles were the main focus of his work.

Do you know anything abut the bird carvings? Does this fit into the late 1800s interest in naturalism?
