Hey everyone

Does anyone know of any resources beyond this site which looks at pre-1886 German silver marks? I have this Ad. Schellenberg sauce boat with tray marked 13 Loth. If unscrewed, there is also a zigzag (assay mark?). I saw that there is already a post addressing this maker, but am curious if I would be able to track down an approximate date on this piece.

Any information is greatly appreciated!

Hi welcome to the forum,

For openers see: http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic ... 010#p30010
The zigzag line is part of the assay process, made when a sample of silver is removed for testing. It's known as "Tremulierstich" or "Tremolierstich" in German and in English; "diet" or proof strike.

Yeah, I had seen that post. Bahner says that this mark was used from 1826-1872, then again from 1886-1904. I assume what I have would be an example of the former rather than the latter since it is in Loth. However, I'm quite curious whether my piece is nearer to 1826 or 1872. I've been surprised how limited the resources on the internet are for this kind of thing.

Hello, difficult to date but the style suggests a production from the second half of the 19th century (around 1860 / 1870) rather than around 1820 or 1830 (which would be less decorated). To add a personal note - I feel that the internet offers limited info only on quite a lot of things, not just on 19th century German silver. Which is why I - conservative as I am - stick to oldfashioned sources of information like books and periodicals. Best wishes, Bahner
