Hi
I recently inherited a rose gold ring fr my wedding coming up shortly.
As far as I can tell the date letter seems to be 1852 (D) as the assay matches from that era, but just wanted to get some other opinions please.

Thank you

Hi,
Welcome to the Forum.
That would be 1928. The maker was Grove Brothers of 169, Hockley Hill, Birmingham.
If the shape of the cartouche made you think that the date was 1852, most hallmarking charts only show the cartouches that were used on silver. The difference often leads to confusion. In this case we can be sure as the 9ct standard was not introduced until 1854.

Thanks Trev.
I thought it couldn't be 1852 as I read somewhere that rose gold wasn't introduced until later.
Just out of interest, how did you know it was that maker please?
Thanks for the help

Hi,
The mark is a well documented one. Thomas E.C. Groves and Arthur Henry Groves, trading as Grove Brothers were registered at both the Birmingham and Chester assay offices.
