Do you think this is Gorham - the mark does not look right

Post by Laverly »

Hi, can anyone add their knowledge to this please. I have a fork and spoon, that are not matching but very similar and are both monogrammed with the same initials. The query is; do you think this is Gorham silver? The marks look similar to the late 19th century but not exact. Plus they have a crab stamped on them, that is the little mark underneath the mark on the fork and on the top of the handle on the spoon. The crab is the French mark but I would of though it should have been the French import mark? Very confused. Thanks for any help.

Hi Laverly,

Certainly is a combination you don't see every day. Was looking through the Gorham patterns on sterling flatware fashions; have a look at Marie Antoinette 1890. They are illustrating a number of variations on that single pattern and a catalogue page.

Not sure if the crab is a French import mark or a small guarantee mark. Let's see what others have to say.
