Hi All,

I have recently acquired a silver cocktail shaker from an antiques fair and was hoping people might be able to clarify the hallmarks for me.
I know it is Sterling and London made but what year does the 'N' represent.
Also and I correct in thinking it was made by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co?

Thanks in advance,
Harry.

Harry,

Your assessment of the silversmith is correct, the Londn date letter capital N with that particular clipped corner cartouche appears to be 1948. I'm sure others can add to this.

Thanks Warren.

Further to this you will see that the removeable top section has lots of small speckles/dots.
Will this clean off, or should I leave it?

I have heard stories that antique silver should never/rarely be cleaned - is this so?
If I can clean it, what is the best solution to bring it up shiny and remove these tarnishings?

Harry.

Good Morning Harry,

Do read the article here: How to Polish Silver http://www.925-1000.com/aPolish.html

As you look at the image of your hallmarks you can see how someone else polished a little too aggressively wearing the marks down considerably.

Have a very good day
