Makers Mark Miss Struck Mark 7 Times

Hi,

Just found this mark on a ladle I was cataloging. Not researched the maker yet but thought you might like to see his attempt at marking his ladle...I count 7 bad strikes: three overstriking, another that reads IC as it was stamped wrong and then three more overstriking! Bad day at the office eh...

Hi Mark,

Thanks for posting this example. Off the top of my head 'MC' is ringing no bells, however, I wonder if this odd type of marking may be deliberate, I can't help but to connect this to the Constable's, William of Dundee and George of Cupar. Both had the habit of repeatedly striking their marks one on top of another.

Perhaps there was a third silversmith Constable in the family? (fourth, if you include Alexander Constable.)

I am guessing unlikely but Trev's link above mentions another Constable with these initials. Would Margaret Constable possibly had her own mark after taking over Williams Business?
