I make that London 1893, maker probably Edward Dimes - the outline of the ED mark punch is not an exact match but I am assuming that may be the result of wear.

I'd say it's a pyx rather than a baptismal cup.

Strictly speaking a pyx is a container for the communion bread. I would think of this as a chalice for the communion wine.

I posted too quickly and need to apologise to Amena. My mind was on the box-like pyx, but there are indeed cup-like versions with this sort of lid.

I don’t know of the ecclesiastical customs in England, but if you try to google “PISSIDE”, the Italian word corresponding to pyx , you’ll find pictures of objects very similar to that posted by sonysmith.
In Italy the chalice for Communion wine is without a lid.

Hi agphile
No need to apologize. Typing "PYX", actually you find only the box-like pyx.Probably it depends upon the uses of different countries.

I believe this type of cup for holding communion wine, is known as a ciborium.

I wasn't able to make out the mark on the right (see link - sorry, too wide)
Does anyone recognise it?

Hi Sonysmith,
Welcome to the Forum.
The mark on the right is the Leopard's Head, the mark of the London Assay Office.
