Trying to ID maker on an antique sterling box, detailed repousse lid with roses, gold wash interior, tiny marks, one on side of lid, one underneath. Looks possibly like an R? Not sure if it's American, doesn't look like English marks, any help appreciated.

Hi,
The mark on the left is not very clear, so relying on its shape; a rectangle with 4 cut corners is seen in Portuguese marks (Porto Assay Office ).

Most of other countries can be excluded as far as I can tell. Not British marks for sure.

I tried to clean up the smaller mark with a toothpick, it is a square with clipped corners, possibly a bird's head with 835 beneath?

I have been unable to find a translation of this book, it could be only available in the original language:

Marcas de Contrastes e ourives Portugueses
2 Vols
Published by Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda 1996.

According to the reference listed above, this mark was used 1907-1931 by InocĂȘncio Recarei Leite de Andrade of Porto and 1931-1964 by his successor, I. Recarei, Filho.

Hope this helps!

Wow, thank you so much. I don't have access to the reference material so to say this helps would be quite an understatement.
