Hello all!

I need I little help, I can't identify the maker nor the town where this piece was manufactured.
The assay master, I think that should be Josef Sosnkowski, but can't find anything referent to the mark С.Б. Can someone identify the maker and town please?

Thanks in advance

Hi,
I think the city is Warsaw as the assay master is Josef Sosnkowski who worked in Warsaw from 1869 until 1896.
No idea about the maker

Hi APRpt -

I think it is B. Szkarlat 1850-1900 from Warzaw. He used several marks.

Hi,
It is С dot Б, not vice versa.
Only in Hungarian family name stands first.
From PL:
The only OC assayer was unknown assayer in St Peterburg
PL 1188 (unknown assayer 1875 - 1886)
С dot Б matches Semen Bogdanov in StPeterburg. (PL 1403)

From Skurlov:
БОГДАНОВ Семен Трофимович, 1828–1875: СДМ. Постникова—Лосева: клеймо № 1403.

But town mark does not match StPeterburg.

I was misled by the error in PL in regard of ``OC`` assayers (Minsk,St Peterburg and Warsaw),repeated by Tardy and Geoffrey Watts.

Josef Sosnkowski's "OC" assayer's mark appears exclusively alongside the many Warsaw maker's marks.

( "O" comes from "Osip", a colloquial variant of "Iosef" ).

His mark is often found on faked ``Judaica`` items.

Therefore, the image of the whole item is always needed.

It is Warsaw and the assayer is Osip Sosnkovsky as Goldstein already pointed out. Postnikova's #1188 is a mistake. Nothing indicates that Sosnkovsky would have ever assayed in St- Petersburg. The mark OC belongs undoubtedly to Warsaw. As a matter of fact, St Petersburg did not use the double headed eagle anymore as a town mark during the 19th century but the crossed anchor grapnel and scepter.

As AG2012 mentioned there is a Semen Bogdanov in St. P at that time but that is a pure coincidence.

For the records: There is another mistake on the same page in Postnikova.
#1178 (IB) has nothing to do with St. Petersburg. The mark belongs to assayer Jan Biedgunkowsky in Warsaw 1860-1865.

Unfortunately there are many mistakes in Postnikova. Just to mention a big one; Minsk on page 201. Most of the maker's marks as well as assayers' marks #1894 (Walery Kostrzebsky 1852-1860) and #1898 (earlier mentioned Osip Sosnkowsky) belong to Warsaw.
Sorry a bit out of topic, but important info anyway.

@AG2012
I was writing while your comment came in. Fine that we agree. However, please do not refer to Watts, it is one of the poor copies of Postnikova.

We should have asked for the image of the whole item.
If it`s ``Judaica`` Dad is probably right.
