Hi,

Long story short. Have a old hand me down walking cane hallmarked STL with crown then SILVER.

Have not been able to find any combination of all three especially STL.

Advice sought one said continental the other definitely Victorian.

It has a gold monogrammed top unable to figure out the letters.

A little bit more to the story. Family came to South Australia in the 1860s from Camborne Cornwall.
Unable to say if the walking cane came out then or it was possibly made in Australia.

Thanks again for any help.

Hi Peter,

That would fit in very nicely. The marks are indeed similar to those used in the Adelaide area.

In this case the letters 'STL' may be an abbreviation for 'STERLING

Thanks again Trev.

Would you have a go at the top of the cane if it is in fact a monogram what are the letters.

Re the cane possibly being made in Adelaide I think you are spot on. There is no makers mark.

My great great grandfather was a mining captain and was at Broken Hill New South Wales for a number of years. Frederick Basse silversmith I believe
was also at Broken Hill and Adelaide. He is the closest I have come up with although all his pieces were marked with the makers name. There may be something inside the knob but I can't remove it without some minor damage.

Thanks again Trev.

I believe these are styled 'Mirror Monograms', and they always confuse me. To me, 'HKE' perhaps?

Hopefully another member will chime in on this one.
