Hello:
I have this silver snuff box that is inscribed with a date of 1613 on it. Based upon the construction, I find it hard to believe that it is that old. It measures approx. 3 1/2" long and 2 1/2" wide and is quite heavy for its size at 127.4 grams. It has a touchmark on the inside that I am unfamiliar with as well as the maker name "Ludvig". Any help will be greatly appreciated in identifying the approximate date of manufacturer, region or maker. Thank you for your time.

Hello!
Welcome to the forum!
Your box made in the Hungarian Kingdom, 1835, in the city of Nyitra (Today belongs to Slovakia, Nitra)
The maker is Johannes Ludwig. (born in 1804, died 1847)
Nice piece, i like it!
Best regards!
Krisztián

Hi,
The data by Krisztián are correct.
Marks from Neutra Biedermeier era are well documented.

But the engraving makes no sense.
There was a cardinal with this name in early 17th century

Ferenc Forgách de Ghymes cardinal from Hungary, mentioned to have participated in the council of cardinals (Consistory) in Rome 12 October 1607.

Box was obviously made in 19th century.(Biedermeier style, Neutra mark with year and documented maker).
In spite of the fact the cardinal with this name existed the question is who engraved this and why. But we often see engraved 17th century dates to deceive. Was the box more appealing to buy and more lucrative to sell because of the engraving ?

Can you make a better picture about the city mark?
I'm collecting the pre 1867 antique hungarian hallmarks, and I don't have Nyitra 1835. Or it is 1836?
Thank you in advance!
BEst regards!
