Neither the place nor the date of birth is known. There are only some data on his production. Merchant Ivan Semenovich Gubkin in 1841 opened a Moscow jewelry and factory. Initially, it employed 30 workers. In 1852, he invited I. Bortnikov, a Russian ornament specialist, who studied this type of art for ten years, to work as the main artist. Gubkin is one of the first jewelers who created an educational Sunday class at the factory for drawing lessons. In 1855, Ivan Semenovich received the honorary title of supplier of the Court of His Imperial Majesty. Participated in the All-Russian industrial exhibitions in 1861 in St. Petersburg and in 1865 in Moscow. He took part in the third world industrial exhibition in London in 1862, for which, together with V. Sazikov and M. Belibekov, he made a precious tray, bowls, bottle, flask, and sugar bowls. By 1861, the annual turnover of production was 500 000 r. and 88 workers were employed. Compared with the factories of Khlebnikov and Ovchinnikov, this is not much, but the quality, beauty and technique of its products were not inferior.
