Your candlestick is more correctly called a chamberstick. It has a London hallmark for the assay year 1749/50 and the maker's mark of William Gould, a known maker of candlesticks and associated items.

Some further amplification of the term Chamberstick
These were a handled holder for a candle used to take you to your bedchamber at night, and to undress by. Whether used to read in bed and/or use the facilities during the night is unknown ! The slot in this chamberstick originally held a snuffer trimmer or perhaps a method of re-igniting the candle. Opinions differ on this - the hood snuffer clearly original to the chamberstick would render another snuffer redundant

Many thanks for your comments. The snuffer is original - both parts have a rooster engraved. The slot could make it possible to hang it on the wall. I suppose this type of chamber sticks are common but it is much older than I could think.
