Silver cup with hallmarks on the bottom

Post by u0107 »

Hello all,

Apologies at the outset if I am not following any of the guidelines - since this is my first post in this forum.

At an estate sale today, we picked a bunch of things - one of which was this cup.

At first sight, it looked lie something that was just added at the last minute but when my wife cleaned it up a little, she found a few hallmarks on the bottom surface.

An internet search did not yield much information- more because we could not for the world make out what the marks were - so this post in this forum.

Would appreciate any pointers as to what these marks are, the origin of this item.

(admin edit - see Posting Requirements )

Thank you in advance.

Best wishes and be safe, all!

Uttam

Hello admin,

Is there a way to edit my original post? I know that editing the original could invite some real misuse by unethical posters - but I am not one! :-)

Just want to present my question and the images in the same post - hence the question.

The edit that you did has been noted - I will take care hereafter.

Thank you for your promptness.

Best and be safe!

Hi Uttam,

If you post the embeded images, I'll edit them in to the original post and delete the others.

https://postimages.org (choose 'Share', then copy the 'Hotlink for forums' code) is recommended. Do not use Photobucket.

Hi,
I have arranged and embedded your images;EPBM is short for ``electro plated base metal``
The maker`s mark on the left probably ends with W, but difficult to decipher;most likely one of numerous Sheffield manufacturers.
Try to decipher all letters in maker`s mark;that might help in identifying the maker.

A slight correction to my colleague's post: EPBM is normally taken as meaning electroplated Britannia metal, Britannia metal being a form of base metal akin to pewter.

Looking at the manufacturer's mark I think it may be HJH and of a similar form to the registered sponsor's mark for precious metals of Henry James Hulbert of H J Hulbert & Co Ltd:

No guarantee that I am right as your image is not especially clear.

Hello,

Thank you @silvermakersmarks and @AG2012.

Both of you have provided an accurate analyses - combined.

Yes HJH is evident in the original article so @silvermakersmarks -your conclusion seems spot on.

And EPBM - a new acronym for me - I will hereafter do my analysis on the basis of this info for any other future objects - wonderful to learn this new info!

And Trev... for whatever it is worth - here are the pictures from postimage - will use this hereafter - thank you for the pointer!

Best wishes all and wish you safe lives in these turbulent times!

Despite Uttam saying that he can see HJH, his new posting - which he still has not managed to embed - clearly shows the mark as HW, so my guess was wrong and AG2012's assessment is correct.
