I have these two 8-1/8" coin silver handle Tifft & Whiting dinner knives and am curious as to the composition of the blades. I believe they are from about 1840, so could they be silver plate? They are definitely silver of some sort. Did they make blades of coin silver? I would think not, being as coin silver would be too soft.

Yes the blades are solid coin silver, and the coin silver content is actually slightly more durable than sterling silver because con silver is 90% silver and sterling silver is 92.5% silver. ::: I actually prefer using 80% silver flatware for actual eating purposes because it is even more durable and the tines seem to stay sharper for longer. :::
