Thanks to everyone who views this post and can offer any insight. The piece has been in my family for as long as I can remember, and I truly have no idea about the actual use or manufacturer/designer. It is quite an interesting piece, it has cups that fit within each other, a funnel, two flasks, an apparent small alcohol burner, spoons (which have a small hallmark) and it all packs up to look like a small bomb.

I am assuming it is sterling silver. Any feedback or guidance greatly appreciated. I have attached a few photos of the pieces laid out and then assembled.

This is a Zeppeloin Airship Cocktail shaker and traveling bar, made in the late 1920ies or early 1930ies.
Most probably not sterling, but silver plated. But no disappointment. This is a great item. Such objects are highly collectible. Very nice item.

Although perfectly matching form of their iconic zeppelin cocktail shaker.

Yes.....

Do not use abrasive polishers to avoid damage to silver plating.
On the other hand, gentle buffing with liquid rouge on soft cloth can protect the surface from further tarnish, at least for some time if the shaker is exposed to air.

thanks for the information on polishing/cleaning. also, i find it interesting now that i know what the item is, i have yet to come across a photo which has the split flasks, has been an interesting learning exercise to date. one post raised the question about the hallmark, trying to chase that down.

Hello, no, this is not a Henckels mark. Strictly this is not a hallmark at all, as this term is reserved for silver. Have never seen this mark before, but I suspect - just a gut feeling really - that it is the logo of either the giver of this set or the taker, possibly it was the gift of a larger company. The shaker is sort of elusive, I am not aware of a Henckels catalogue of the time that illustrates it. There is just one illustration in a German magazine of the time (Die Kunst und das Schöne Heim, if I remember correctly) of which I am aware of and it gives WMF as the maker ! Another gut feeling - I believe this to be an error and Henckels to be the real maker. Have seen the set appear on the market several times in recent decades, the insides slighty different. Possibly there are contemporary variants which may explain the split flasks here which do not appear elsewhere and are indeed new to me, too. Anyway, a striking example of high class German modernistic design. Congrats ! Bahner
