Hi,

It's silver-plated. The maker was Alexander Katch, a German, who set up a factory in St Petersburg in Russia in the second half of the 19th century and was in business there until at least c.1910. The 'GP' stands for 'Galvano Plated'.

Hello, see this topic
viewtopic.php?f=26&t=55834&p=178988&hilit=kach#p178988
for some Katsch (!) family history. Looks like the Russian branch of the family was forced to leave Russia after the outbreak of WW I. They had remained Prussian citizens though living in Russia which made them enemy aliens after 1914. I suspect they joined the Berlin branch of the Katsch family. The Berlin factory of Katsch had been founded in 1873 and had become an independent - and very successful - factory some years after that. As of May 31, 1889 Katsch-Berlin was sold to the WMF and became the Berlin branch of that major player, Alex Katsch jun,. staying on to become head of the Berlin branch of WMF. Regards, Bahner
