Hi,

I've purchased these two wonderful salts. They were simply advertised as continental. I could be completely wrong but I think they may have the crowned V mark. The date letter for 1847. It is the makers mark, 'IR' or 'IB' which is confusing me. I've looked on this site Posting Requirements and the only marks that match those initials are from the 18th Century.

If anyone can help I'd be very grateful,

Hi, the marks, if Dutch, make no sense to me also not a matching pair of open salts, roughly cast. It could be german and perhaps these are pseudo marks.

Hanau pseudo marks, late 19th or early 20th century.
Very popular Nuremberg letter N as pseudo mark for ‚‚antique‚‚ silver, seen on innumerable Hanau pieces.
Almost every collector of silver (including myself) was deluded and then disappointed with this N believing in ‚‚great find of silver centuries old‚‚.

"roughly cast" is a polite understatement.
First of all, are you sure it's silver?

It could be tested, but I think it is .800.
