Smith Pick GATEWAY Puzzle

A fork with commercial topmark of Gateway in block capitol letters suggests a link to the GATEWAY HOTEL group in West Texas and East New Mexico which was founded in 1929. However, the item carries a mark for Albert Pick (as the supplier) and E.H.H. Smith (as the maker) which is problematic as Smith became Blackstone in 1914, and ultimately just Pick as that firm took over control. Could it be possible that an old mark was somehow re-used fifteen years late? Might there be another explanation for New Old Stock remaining at the factory? Or do I need to start the search for an earlier era user all over again?
