Question about the term Handwrought

I came up with a real nice piece of jewelry at a rcent auction. The item is clearly marked handwrought. Research I have done indicates this mark or term ceased its usage in the early part of the 20th century. At the same time some info I came across makes me think the term was used or applied as a mark on some jewelry in the 1950s. Can I get some clarification on the matter. Thank you and have a happy new year. NewyorkNewyork

"Handwrought" literally means that an object was made by hand rather than by machine. Additionally, the word suggests that the object was unique rather than mass-produced. The early 20th century Arts and Crafts Movement gave the word "handwrought" a particular association, but the work of today's artisan and craftsman is equally handwrought.

Hope this helps. Kit

The Mealy Manufacturing Company, Baltimore, Maryland, was a jewelry manufacturer who used the words "Hand Wrought" in their trademark. They were in business roughly from 1900 through 1956.
