WHITE STAR LINE - R.M.S. TITANIC/R.M.S. OLYMPIC
We all know the story of the Titanic, but here's a piece that, quite literally, may have just 'missed the boat'.
A large soda syphon holder marked for the White Star Line and made by Walker & Hall in 1910:
It was in September 1910 that the White Star Line issued the orders for the silverware for the sister-ships, Olympic and Titanic. Elkington & Co. were to be the main supplier, with The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co., Mappin & Webb, and Walker & Hall also receiving orders. The orders being huge, other firms were likely involved as out-workers to the main suppliers.
The silverware would have been delivered to the the White Star's company stores at Southampton for distribution to the ships.
As this piece was not found on the bottom of the Atlantic, it likely saw service on the R.M.S. Olympic, but on another day, who knows what what its fate may have been?
