I have multiple pieces by Black Starr and Frost. My pieces are labeled only with their name and have no additional markings anywhere. There is no denotation of purity.

Every piece I have seen of theirs for sale is being advertised as real sterling and I have never been able to find a piece being advertised as plated (this is of course, before they merged with Gorham). Thus, I have always assumed these pieces were sterling and that they just did not always mark them as sterling.

However, when I was recently looking back through their company history and advertisements, their advertisements do mention that they sold plated wears.

Does anyone have information about this? This has worried me that maybe these items are plated...

If it was sterling, it would be marked as such. If not, it may be coin, thought that would likely have been marked, as well. Given the name only, it would be best to assume plated goods until proven otherwise.
N.B. An acid test means nothing; each piece would need to be passed thorough an XRF detector to determine true metallic content. Unless you have a friend in the trade, the cost would likely exceed the value.

I also have a very large tray which is only marked Black, Starr & Frost. I have not found a match to it when I searched it. I can’t find the pattern either. Hoping someone has more information?
