This silverplated item is 4 inches (10.2cm) long. These were made from the mid 18th century onwards.
What was it used for?

Here's a clue.
I believe you would have seen this item on the dining table, maybe even in the kitchen.

That's close enough for me Miles. Good work.

They are called "dish wedges". The upper edge is serrated in order to grip the rim beneath a plate or dish.
They tilt the dish so that all the gravy or sauce is gathered to one side.
