This American cup was made by John Hull and Robert Sanderson, Boston, around 1651. It's almost 3 inches (7.62 cm.) wide.
A larger version of this same form was made at the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th century.
These are still used today by vintners and wine stewards. Often refered to as wine tasters.
What was this item originally called?

caudle cup; caudle was a mix of warm ale or wine mixed with bread or gruel, eggs, sugar, and spices.

It was also called a dram in this smaller form.

Dram cup is the term I was looking for.
Dram is sort of an informal unit of measurement which meant a small amount of liquid, especially Scotch whisky.
