Lion and crown - Sheffield for sure
P -nearest match to the shield and font is 1808
the makers mark is G.U - I cannot find a makers mark of this type in any list online.

Can anyone help in terms of the makers mark and also in confirming the date ?

Lastly, theres an indent next to the hallmarks which I thought was an error made by the edge of whatever the marker used to mark the silver with but as I have added these images, on screen it looks like it may well be a duty mark ????? If so then which is it ?

Please help me !!!!

The date is 1858 and it was made by George Unite in Sheffield. He produced many good and original designs. The mark to the left of the crown is the duty mark.

Thanks for the information !
Trouble is the date letter doesnt look at all like the one for the year you suggest.
Talk about confusing !

Kind regards

Hmmm, the letter for the two dates is identical - "P".

Miles is correct, that is the date mark of 1858, had it been 1808 then the crown of Sheffield would be above the "P" (small items marked like that then) and the duty mark would be facing the other way, also George Unite was working around that time.
