Hi everyone, I'm a newcomer. Great place to be!
My father gave me this medal like thing some years back. It belonged to his maternal grandfather. I have no idea what it signifies. It has no inscriptions or any hints. Its hallmark at the back tells me that it was made in Birmingham in 1915. I couldn't identify the maker whose initials are HJC.

Initials should have been added to this one. In danish we have something called "frakke skjold" they are to be placed inside your coat or jacket so that everybody can see that the piece of close belongs to you. I have a few with initials that has belonged to my grandfather. I will post a picture of them later.
At least i think tht was the intention of yours too.

These are from the beginning of 1900s - I would sya that your piece has the same function.

This is a watch fob. It was made to hang from a pocket watch chain (an Albert). The fob would be attatched to the part of the chain which was in the centre of a gentleman's waistcoat.

ah...interesting. Thank you so much! I guess my great grandfather never bothered with his things after he went blind, and it got passed on without any initials!
