Elsa Bates Freund (1912-2001), was born in Missouri and spent her early adult life working as a grade school teacher. In 1939, she married the WPA artist Louis Freund and the couple opened a summer art school in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. It was here that Elsa began creating jewelry as part of the crafts program. In 1949, Elsa & Louis moved to Deland, Florida as artists in residence at Stetson College, where Elsa truly refined her technique of fusing ceramics and glass with metal. The work of Elsa Freund is in the permanent collections of a number of important American museums. |
