Tuttle Silversmiths ~ Boston
Date marks were instituted by Tuttle Silversmiths during the presidential term of Calvin Coolidge, their use continued at least as late as the Clinton presidency and they may still be in use.
According to "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers" by Dorothy Rainwater, the Roman numeral below the initialed crescent represents the "term of office" of the president. However, the two pictured examples (left; Calvin Coolidge, right; Franklin Roosevelt) indicate that the numerals represent the specific year in the President's term(s) of office.
