the "sterling" mark on indian silver

When did Indian silver makers begin stamping their wares "sterling"? I have some objects that claim to be late 19th c. and are stamped sterling, but cannot find any info. about when that stamp was first implemented!
Any info most appreciated!

2 necklaces with marked, sterling components - designers?

Thank you so much - that was extremely helpful. I was thinking it looked similar to the Swedish marks, but wasn't sure. Confusion cleared!
