Another error in American Silver Marks... Thanks for the correction WEV... Am on your coast the past 2 weeks and only have one book with me... About Nathaniel Lang, being born in 1757, then he would have begun working about in 1778... do you agree?

He was born in 1736, most likely finished his apprenticeship at 21 or in 1756, the longer drop tends to drift earlier from my limited experiance so I would be guessing at 1770 1790. The term "Hallmark" refer to the Guild halls in England only, the marks on american silver are generally refered to as Markers Marks when the name or initials are used and pseudo-hallmarks or devices when not...

Some folks don't want there silver polished. Some want it as found. Several dealers will polish the coin silver for you but they use Buffers as they have to polish so much that they don't have the time, and buffing Coin silver removed the Patina.... I personally don't want it buffed to chrome mirror...

Coin silver was initally created from coins ergo the name, it was marked "Coin" when Sheet silver became available in the 1810 to 1820's to let customers know that the sheet silver caontained the same purity as coin...
